SmartHouses

Second Place

Switch on the lamp, and watch your living room flood with light. Do you think about where this energy is coming from? Do you care? Imagine a house with a solar panel built into its roof. Everyday the panel would absorb energy and store it in a battery, the energy would then be disbursed to every appliance in the house when needed. A solar panel so large and inconspicuous that you could do everything from powering a microwave, to powering the lights and turning them off automatically when you weren’t in the room anymore. Imagine reducing the carbon emissions by 75% just because you didn’t have to worry about wasting electricity. A house that was completely voice-censored and so intelligent it could have its own personality. An invention so commonly used it would cost no more then a regular house. A house that could have the time set to turn off the power for the night everywhere except in your rooms where the floors and blankets would stay heated, or be cooled down depending on the temperature outside…

Dear Diary,

I am sick today. The Immunity Regulator isn’t working because of the lack of sun we’ve had for the last few days, so it was impossible for me to get an Injection to heal. I wish that when the power went down the House wouldn’t prioritize the IR last. It makes things so inconvenient; even with the Vita C I take, it’s not enough to push away the awful runny nose and sneezing. Luckily I was able to get to my Desk and log on in order to go to School Ed. I have loads of work I have to do, but I Chatted the Administrator in my sect that I had to log off quickly to take my Vita, and get a Nutri-Shake. It was a sunny day, but the lack of power from the few days before caused the House to use the remaining energy slower while it recharged with new solar power. This made the Nutri-Shake take a full minute to prepare, as supposed to the usual ten seconds. I didn’t mind though; the House has been very nice to me while my parents are away. It even allowed me to stay up an extra hour instead of turning the power off at ten o’clock at night everywhere except my room. This will makes things very inconvenient, especially when you’re trying to watch the latest Feed on the Hologram and suddenly the power goes off because it’s past your bedtime. It was so hot today that I had to tell the House to turn of the floors and reset the wall fans so I wouldn’t overheat. The House made my favorite food today, pancakes for breakfast, pizza for lunch and roast beef for dinner. My mom used to talk about how she had to cook the food, and serve it on plates back in her time, there were even places you could go to sit at a table and buy food and eat it there. I don’t understand it; it’s so much quicker to take the Supplement, all you need to do is swallow it with water and it tastes wonderful depending on how you prioritized your House. My parents filed an application for a House that had cooking first, then efficiency, discipline, and then the cleaners. My father absolutely loves to chide me on how when he was young he had to make his bed himself, wash himself, brush his teeth and get dressed, all on his own. He didn’t just hop into the Auto to get ready for a new day. I used to tease him about how by the time he was done with that everyone in School Ed would be logged off, including the Administrators. Things have changed quite a bit in the last few years, ever since 2010 when the human race almost wiped themselves out, the rest of the world has been very careful to leave nature alone. I am glad with the way the world works now; I just wish that back then, so long ago, humans had taken better care of our planet.

That’s all for now!
